Listener Mike sees these along highway 67 in Iowa and it's driving him crazy
not knowing what they are. The boxes say "Property of Illinois
Emergency Management" but they are in Iowa, what gives?
We can always count on our listeners and we got the answer
quickly!
They are RADIATION DETECTORS! The IEMA (Illinois Emergency
Management Agency) has had them in place for about the past 20
years around the state of Illinois with their 11 reactors, but
only in Iowa the past 5 years. Recently they switched from wired
to solar power so they are more noticeable with the solar panels
on top. The detectors on 67 are part of a ring of 16 monitors
around the Exelon plant north of Cordova.
