Automobile Age Gauge
You can tell you are getting older if you remember these things about cars.
|
When the high beam switch was on the floorboard. When you had to pull out, then push back the buttons on your radio to preset stations. When the manual transmission shifter was on the steering column (3 in the tree) and the ignition switch was on the dashboard. Push-button automatic controls on the dash. Air vents that you opened and closed manually that let fresh air rush down by your feet. Rear-view mirrors that didn't adjust for night driving. Side view mirrors that didn't say "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear." When auto makers hid the gas tank inlet behind the license plate holder or behind the tail lights. When chrome side pipes were the rage. When the ash tray was almost as big as the glove box. When none of the dashes were padded. When there were no seat belts, much less shoulder belts. When there were vacuum powered windshield wipers. When you could unlock a car with a twisted hanger. When there was an antenna wire in the windshield. When there was a floor windshield wiper switch. Passenger-side rear view mirrors didn't exist. No cup holders were in a car. When there was a full-size spare tire. When gas caps had a key hole. When cars came standard with chrome bumpers. |
