Eagle Blog
We tried contacting local police, sheriff and animal
control authorities but couldn't get any help. Finally,
the DNR referred us to the Raptor Education Group in Antigo,
Wisconsin; a facility that treats and rehabilitates wild birds.
They helped confirm that the bird was a young bald eagle. With
no trained rescue personnel in the area, it'd be up to us to
capture the eagle and help get it to their rehab facility.
A REGI volunteer talked us through the entire process via cell phone.
Then, we traveled to Gilman, WI to deliver Herky to
Daniale Steffen, a volunteer transporter for REGI.
Daniale made the 90 mile trip to the Raptor facility in
Antigo where Herky is being treated. She weighed
a little over 4 pounds--less than half the normal
weight of a female eagle her age.
